Book Name: The God of Small Things

Genre: Fiction
"And the air was full of Thoughts and Things to say. But at times like these, only the Small Things are ever said. Big Things lurk unsaid inside."
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy is a semi-autobiographical work, and her debut novel published in 1997 and won the 1997 Man Booker Prize for Fiction. The plot revolves around two dizygotic twins, Rahel (Sister) and Estha (Brother), who thinks of them as "me" together, and separately as "we" or "us", and their mother, Ammu who, after getting separated from their father falls in love with an untouchable Velutha by breaking the love laws, that lay down who should be loved and how much. Further, in the story, we will see that how the death of a cousin, Sophie Mol, and the love of their mother, Ammu and Velutha affects the twin's life and how their lives turn upside down. Rahel and Estha also share identities and thoughts too, as Rahel remembers "waking up one night giggling at Estha's funny dream" and Rahel also has one memory of Estha that she has no right to have as Estha never shares with her directly but still she knows that. Arundhati Roy has explained in a very subtle way the fact that how small things are connected and can affect one's life.
The God of Small Things is a masterpiece. After finishing the novel I had a mix of feelings toward this book. I have read this book, but still, this book is a stranger to me. This book is like those friends to whom you know and they share with you everything and you understand also but still, you don't understand, and whenever you meet them they are like a new person to you. Those who have already read this book can understand my feelings that why I am saying this. I would recommend everyone to read this book once.
Now, coming on the narrative style of this novel. The narration of this story is very simple and it is narrated by Rahel and the story goes on in flashbacks. The language is neither too tough nor too easy still a little difficult to understand for those who are not really into reading and it will take time to get you inside the story, but once you are in there is no going back, you will not be able to put the book down. I would recommend everyone to read this book even if you are not into reading then also give this book a try.
"This was the trouble with families. Like invidious doctors, they know just where it hurt."
