"You can't know rumours. You can hear them, but you can't know them."
"Thirteen Reason Why" by Jay Asher is a story about a girl, Hannah Baker, who took her own life. Before committing suicide, she recorded thirteen reasons for her suicide in a tape. The whole story progresses while listening to the cassette of Hannah Baker, by our Protagonist, Clay Jensen. Clay is also one of the reasons for her suicide and if he will listen, then he will know how he ends up on that list and how he contributed to her suicide.
Through the dual narratives of Hannah and Clay, the author successfully weaves an intricate and heart-wrenching plot of confusion, depression and suicide which will definitely impact the minds of the reader. "Thirteen Reasons Why" addresses problems of adolescents, love, confusion, misunderstanding, rumours, bullying, sexual assault, rape, stress, anxiety, loneliness, depression, mental health, suicide and a whole lot more.
I would recommend everyone to read this novel once. This novel is going to teach you several things in a subtle manner. What I have learned from this book is that even the smallest things count and can affect somebody's life in ways we can't even think about. This book also says that what sounds like a joke to you, might have a serious impact on someone's life. Rumours are rumours don't pay heed to it. More importantly, just because somebody seems good to you doesn't mean that they are doing great. One person may be joyful with others, but deep down they are not mentally well they are depressed. So, we have to be very mindful of those around us.
"When you judge someone by their past, it can make that past impossible to escape."
