"A Mother's Goodbye" by Kasturi Patra is a story of three siblings, Avik, studying in class 12th, Mou, studying in class 11th, and Ishaan, an 8-year-old child. One day when Mou returned from her school, she saw a note from her mother stating that "She is going away. Leaving the house and the three of them. " The realization that mother has really left them all alone by themselves, they decided not to disclose this to anyone else they would have to separate from Ishaan.
Avik and Mou tried every possible way to find about her mother's whereabouts, they even mail her to come back but nothing seems to work. One day their paternal aunt came to take charge of their house, they resisted, but they were helpless. So, they tried one more last to attempt to contact their mother by mailing her and telling all about this matter of their house being taken away by their paternal aunt. And to their surprise, her mother replied, and she sends them an address to come. After seeing their mother they come to know some brutal truth about their mother's life which they have not realized when she was residing with them.
A Mother's Goodbye is a heart touching and soul-stirring story of Avik, Mou, Ishaan and their mother, Deepa Ghosh. This story made me realise that how we as children take our parents for granted and totally ignore their point of view, their feeling and their happiness. We always think that our parents are happy in our happiness, but what we forget is that they are also human beings, they also have their own desires and own happiness which they eventually sacrifice for the children. We fail to appreciate our parents for their sacrifice and their selfish love. We fail to see that they could also be in a problem they could also be dealing with anxiety or depression.
The story is being narrated by Avik and Mou which made it easier to understand their individual point of view, which makes it more interesting to read. The language is lucid and the story is captivating which will keep you hooked through the plot. I enjoyed a lot reading this book, but the character which I loved most is Ishaan. This 8-year-old child stole my heart and while reading I was able to picture him and his every facial expression.
Why did their mother abandon them? What was the truth that they came to know after meeting their mother? Is she going to come back to them? How these three siblings survived all alone on their own? How are they going to handle an 8-year-old child? To know the answers to these questions you have to read the book first.
